The caption for this August 12, 1944, Star Weekly (Toronto) photograph reads: “Built in the 14th century, this ancient church, St. Pierre, suffered the same fate as much of the rest of Caen. Looking up the main street, figures can be seen coming out of the doorway of the church. During the terrific bombing that preceded the Allied occupation, Canadian troops climbed trees and roofs, ignoring the Luftwaffe, to see the whole town under a cloud of black smoke, racked by bombing.”
