Byron Cooper Sisler was born on June 2, 1894, in Lemonville, Ontario, to Eli Sisler and Elizabeth Cooper. Eli Sisler was a blacksmith and came from a long line of Quakers. Byron's family moved to Mount Albert and Eli died there in 1907 when Byron was 13. Byron attended school in Mount Albert where he would meet Mildred Ramsden. After starting school in Grade 1, she was sent home because she was too advanced and was instructed to return for Grade 3. On the day Byron met her, he said that she was the girl he would marry. Mildred Ramsden was a student and boarding in Markham when Byron signed up for the war; she skipped class to go to the Markham Train Station to wave to Byron as his train passed.
