These maps are from the Asiatic-Pacific Theater 1944 Series, 44/A & 44/B. They were produced by British Military Intelligence to assist pilots who had crashed in enemy territory or prisoners of war trying to escape from German POW camps. Silk was used, and later rayon, because the material was lightweight, compact, and didn’t crease and distort important topographical features. Another benefit was that the silk was much quieter than paper.
