The machine gun was an infantry support weapon developed in the early 1880s by Hiram Maxim. The German army adopted the Maxim as their machine gun whereas the Canadian and British troops used the Colt, Vickers, or Lewis models. Maxim machine gun crews were typically comprised of five soldiers. This Maxim machine gun was captured by Canadian troops during WWI. As part of the post-war distribution by the War Trophies Commission of objects brought back from the battlefields of WWI, this machine gun, along with another machine gun and two field guns, were given to the Town of Cobalt.
