This sword belonged to Captain Victor Adolph Hall. In what was Canada’s first official overseas deployment of troops, 7,000 Canadians signed up to fight for the British Empire in South Africa. The Boers, descendants of early Dutch settlers in the region, were challenging Britain’s stronghold in the region. In what became a very bloody war, Captain Hall was involved in training and in the guarding of the strategic Orange River Bridge. Captain Hall was awarded the Queen’s South African Medal for his service.
