A Downed German Aircraft

The caption for this January 30, 1943, Star Weekly (Toronto) photograph reads: “This wrecked ‘Junkers 88’ is only one of many brought down on Russia’s snowbound fronts. The Soviet claims to have destroyed 10,000 Axis planes in the past year, which would account for the Luftwaffe’s ineffectiveness in North Africa.” That being said, the Junker 88s were German bombers that performed well for the Luftwaffe. Designed for speed, almost 15,000 were built during the WWII era.
