A canal and a windmill

George Cassidy painted a number of works based on his wartime experiences. This work in progress (tempera, graphite, paper and board) was originally unsigned and is likely based on Major George Cassidy’s time in Belgium and the Netherlands during the war. The Algonquin Regiment fought at the Battle of the Scheldt, a grueling two-month battle through a series of marshlands and canals that were in the coastal area of Belgium and the Netherlands.
